“we’d like to have that microphone back”

twenty-three minutes over brussels.

Lee Hazlewood

It’s old news to the hip; Lee Hazlewood is dead. He was 78, from Oklahoma; like Woody Guthrie, a hilarious fatalist; like all Oklahoma people, had one of those voices you hear once and can’t never forget; like Paul Robeson and had a preference for epically scoped 30 minutes LPs; like Scott Walker.

Lee Hazlewood

Let’s do this thing in reverse order; like a time machine.

2002: “For Every Solution There’s a Problem”
A Taste of You

1999: “Farmisht, Flatulence, Origami, ARF!!! and Me…”
Ain’t Misbehavin’

[sorry about the gap here, someone else can fill you in on those years]

1972: “13”
Tulsa Sunday

1971: “Requiem for an Almost Lady”
Requiem for an Almost Lady

1970: “Cowboy in Sweden”
Cold Hard Times

1969: “The Cowboy & The Lady” with Ann-Margret

1968: “Love and Other Crimes”
She’s Funny That Way

1968: “Nancy & Lee”
Some Velvet Morning

1967: “Lee Hazlewood-ism: Its Cause and Cure”
Dark in My Heart

1966: “The Very Special World of Lee Hazlewood”
These Boots are Made for Walking (in case someone is only familiar with the Nancy Sinatra version)

1965: “The N.S.V.I.P.’s”
Go Die Big City & Have You Made Any New Bombs Today?

1963: “Trouble is a Lonesome Town”
Peculiar Guy

A small sidenote, vslam is currently one of the featured sites on MXPlay; I guess we’re all famous now. Seems like something you might want to check out if you listen to a lot of music off websites.

Abwärts

I’ve got a couple of posts back here I’ve been working on for a while, but they’re still not ready. So, to keep both of the readers satiated, here’s the latest NDW stuff I’ve picked up.

According to the “critics” these guys were “militant leftists”, but who gives a shit? They had an interesting sense of humor (Moon of Alabama), a killer sense of style (Türkenblues) and I can’t understand 95% of the things they’re saying.

And more importantly, it’s “totally fucking danceable!”

First, their first EP. Computerstaat, 1979.

Negro Church Music

i would have sworn that i’d posted at least a track or two from this LP in the past, but can’t find anything; so either it was on the previous vslam or i just can’t find it and it really is in the archives.

if gospel is your thing there are some great little things in here; but nothing earth shattering for the seasoned listener. (please refer to the goodbye babylon box set for advanced topics)

however, if gospel isn’t your thing this is a good place to start. recorded and compiled by the omnipotent Alan Lomax in the 50s, there is a good representation of southern gospel styles from east of the mississippi clear to the georgia coast (ie, a good representation of southern gospel). there’s even a “sermon fragments” for the less timid.

Death Have Mercy
I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
Jesus is Real to Me
I Love the Lord
(sermon fragment)
I’m Going Home on the Morning Train

I’m Gonna Sail Like a Ship on the Ocean
Blow Gabriel
Motherless Children
What Do You Think About Jesus? (He’s All Right)

(this one like the Kenny Rogers one is from one of my vinyl rips. anyone have a preference on presentation? single tracks or compiled into sides?)

apologies; I guess.

well that certainly was a long “couple of weeks”.

anyway, here’s a quickie just to say I am back…finally.
