That this was Coltrane’s last (live) recording makes the intensity and mania of the performance all the more satisfying and depressing. You can hear the abandon that just never was quite captured in the studio; despite the greatness of Stellar Regions, Meditations etc. they were no match for the quintet (Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison, Rashied Ali, Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane) live.
