Negro Church Music

i would have sworn that i’d posted at least a track or two from this LP in the past, but can’t find anything; so either it was on the previous vslam or i just can’t find it and it really is in the archives.

if gospel is your thing there are some great little things in here; but nothing earth shattering for the seasoned listener. (please refer to the goodbye babylon box set for advanced topics)

however, if gospel isn’t your thing this is a good place to start. recorded and compiled by the omnipotent Alan Lomax in the 50s, there is a good representation of southern gospel styles from east of the mississippi clear to the georgia coast (ie, a good representation of southern gospel). there’s even a “sermon fragments” for the less timid.

Negro Church Music LP Cover

Death Have Mercy
I Want Jesus to Walk with Me
Jesus is Real to Me
I Love the Lord
(sermon fragment)
I’m Going Home on the Morning Train
Power
Jesus on the Main Line
On That Rock
This Little Light of Mine
I’m Gonna Sail Like a Ship on the Ocean
Blow Gabriel
Motherless Children
What Do You Think About Jesus? (He’s All Right)

(this one like the Kenny Rogers one is from one of my vinyl rips. anyone have a preference on presentation? single tracks or compiled into sides?)

Great to see this album. I knew it well in the 1960’s, and have been searching for it.

    Thanks a lot!
