“Armed with an inspired ugly name, this avant-jazz-rock trio (sax/organ, drums, bass/vocals) from Milwaukee has abundant kitsch intelligence, which provides witty, dadaist lyrics for sharp songs like “What’s in Your Mouth” and “(I Don’t Want to Be an) Encyclopedia Salesman.” The music’s a bit grating and only slightly melodic, but exciting in its own abrasive way. Rather than assaulting music, the Oil Tasters kick at sounds with curiosity and enthusiasm, creating an unpleasant but listenable breed of weirdness.” - Ira Robbins, quoted from Trouser Press
OK, first of all, fuck everything Ira Robbins just said besides the Oil Tasters being exciting & coming from Milwaukee. Yeah, a rad punk band w/ sax instead of guitar. Drummer went on to be in the Violent Femmes, incidentally. Here’s 3 tracks, all in a row on their self-titled record, originally released on Thermidor in 1982: “Nacho Party,” “My Girlfriend’s Ghost,” & “Get Out Of The Bathroom”
The Tasters turned to guitars & became the Haskels, also rad: “Taking The City By Storm”
There’s a nice comp out on the tiny tiny label Splurge Communications called History In 3 Chords that chronicles the Milwaukee punk scene, check it out. It includes some otherwise unreleased material, I’m pretty sure, seeing as one of the Haskels tracks isn’t on their EP.
